Psychic Spiritual Healing - Why Do People Use Faith Healers?

Approximately 3.7 percent of the population use Psychic spiritual healing methods to treat their mental or physical health. Although this may seem low, it may not reflect marginalization, lack of education, or self-rated health. This study aims to understand why these people use these therapies. To that end, we used data from the National Survey of American Life (NSAL), a nationally representative, multistage area probability survey, conducted between 2001 and 2003 and including 6,082 adults aged 18 and older.

Psychic Spiritual Healer Use is 3.7%

The prevalence of faith healers is higher among people of higher sociodemographic groups, but it is not clear why people use these practitioners. Some studies suggest that people who are more educated, have fewer health concerns, and are married are more likely to use spiritual healers. Other studies suggest that people who have been married are less likely to use spiritual healers, as are Caribbean Blacks.

A systematic analysis of the prevalence of spiritual healer use would provide data on the factors that contribute to its use. Prior studies have identified several psychological factors that may be associated with its use, including perceived social support and strain, religious/spiritual preferences, and religious ideas. This information could be used by researchers and clinicians to understand the optimal use of these healers.

The use of psychic spiritual healers was associated with higher education, being previously married, and living in the Northeast or West. It was lower among respondents who were in good health. Nevertheless, the net level of use did not show significant differences by health status. The survey also found that the use of psychic healers was most common among people who live in the Northeast and West.

It is Not Due to Poor Education

Many people who seek spiritual healing believe that they are lacking something fundamental, such as a connection to their soul. Sometimes the issue is verbalized, but in other cases it is a more profound and personal experience. Regardless of the reason for seeking healing, you may be surprised to learn that it is rooted in your soul.

This research will investigate sociodemographic and health-related correlates of spiritual healer use in the United States. The study will focus on a large national dataset, which allows for a more thorough investigation. This data source will also allow for a more focused focus on socioeconomic disadvantage and health need. It will include responses from the National Survey of American Life, which was conducted in 2001-2003 and included 6,082 adults aged 18 and older.

It is Not Due to Self-rated Health

Psychic Spiritual Healing is not due to poor education, low self-rated health, or marginal racial or ethnic status. It is also not associated with a lack of access to medical care. The reasons for seeking the services of a spiritual healer may be different for different people.
